Press and data
Plateop analyses open vehicle inspection data for car buyers. We share the resulting figures here with journalists and researchers: free to use, with attribution.
The MOT Monitor
The MOT Monitor is an annual publication on the state of the Great Britain vehicle fleet, based on open data from the DVSA, the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency. Each edition shows the initial failure rate by vehicle age, which defect categories occur most often and which models stand out in either direction.
An edition appears once a year, following DVSA's own annual test-year cycle, and is never changed after publication: cited figures remain verifiable on this page.

The European Inspection Index
The European Inspection Index puts the inspection figures from the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Czechia side by side: not as a raw percentage, since those countries each count failures differently, but as an index relative to their own country average. One hundred is average; higher means failed more often than average in that country and age group.
View the Inspection IndexMethod in brief
All figures come from open DVSA MOT test data for a single test year. Only the initial test counts; a retest is excluded. Fleet figures come from the full GB MOT fleet; category and model figures come from the models Plateop tracks. Each edition states its exact coverage and thresholds.
